Firstly, as an employer I need to keep reminding myself that the task of attracting the right talent to my business is ongoing. I have learned (the hard way) that ‘hope is not a plan’ when it comes to making sure I have the right people in the right seat on the right bus.
Companies in Australia and beyond prepare yearly strategies specifically designed to meet their recruitment challenges. It’s time our organisations did likewise – and put their recruitment stake in the ground making it a specific, measurable goal to recruit only the best individuals they can possibly find for their businesses.
As a recruitment company we still don’t come across this approach as often as we should.
Secondly – retention will continue to be a key challenge as companies work on keeping the people they have got…and understanding what will be needed for future business challenges. It’s time to reinvest in your people, free up the training budgets, talk to your employees about their aspirations and be in ‘protection mode’.
Thirdly – critical to success in recruitment is your understanding of employer branding. Companies with bad reputations are suffering when it comes to hiring. People care about who they work for. They research on the internet, ask around and they will ask you about the stability of your company as well.
In a nutshell – there is no place for a dodgy ‘employer reputation’.
