Quick Tip List: dealing with difficult employees

Here’s a quick tip list for dealing with problematic employees, which should keep you out of trouble and on the path to a harmonious win-win outcome.

1.  Evaluate – act quickly but think before you act.

2.  Recognise – most people can be difficult from time to time – evaluate carefully.

3.  Research – get the facts. Ignore the gossip. Act on the facts.

4.  Get a plan in place – like everything else in business, a plan is needed. When prepared, act.  The longer you leave it the harder it is to control it.

5.  Confront the problem – it may not be easy but you have to do your job.

6.  Deal with the behaviour NOT the person – your goal is to develop a solution. Don’t attack the person, instead focus on the inappropriate behaviour.

7.  Use ‘I” statements

8.  Don’t assume

9.  See if the other person can help solve the problem

10.  Discover the reasons for the behaviour – listen actively. Stay calm and positive.

11.  Summarise what they said: “So what I understand you are saying is…”

12.  Put the solution plan in place

13.  Use breathing techniques as a way to control your nerves!
